Estonia’s most famous National Park and LT&C-Example, Soomaa, under logging attack

After just having celebrated World Wetlands Day in Soomaa National Park, sad news from Estonia went around the globe: locals noticed signs of large-scale forest logging in the heart of the park. The logging area belongs to the Natura 2000 network and is dangerously close to one of the largest pristine boglands of all EU countries. It’s undoubtedly a severe contradiction to what the EU has just committed to with its Biodiversity Strategy 2030 to increase the European protected area network to cover 30% of the region. As the area is also profiled by our member and ecotourism provider, Aivar Ruukel, as Estonia’s LT&C Example, joint political action from both nature conservation and tourism representatives now is in demand.
