As Thomas Krumenacker from RiffReporter reports, will the World Nature Summit, COP15 of the UN Biodiversity Convention (CBD), take place December 5-17 in Montreal, Canada. In his article, he states: “After several postponements, the negotiations on a global agreement for the protection of nature are now to take place in Montreal, Canada, in December instead of in China. The United Nations and China, as the actual host country of the conference, have agreed on this after weeks of wrangling on Monday in Nairobi, as RiffReporter learned from delegation circles.

The 15th Conference of the Parties (COP15) to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), also known as the World Summit on Nature, will after that now take place from December 5 to 17 in the Canadian metropolis, which is also the seat of the CBD Secretariat. Initially, the summit was to take place as early as 2020 in order to adopt targets over ten years until 2030.”

The fundamental goal to be decided at COP15, not only from LT&C’s perspective, is to protect by 2030 at least 30% of the global natural land- and marine space by the so-called 30×30 goal. The 30×30 goal is equally essential for our future as the climate goal of keeping the further warming under 1,5 degrees. In line with over 95 nations, including the EU, and our partner, Campaign for Nature, LT&C is committed to the 30×30 goal. From its beginning, it has been the mission of LT&C to demonstrate that nature-based tourism can play a significant role in implementing the United Nations protected area goal.
