Vision 2030
My VISION is: 30% of the planet’s land and marine areas are really effectivly protected by 2030. This so-called “30 by 30” target of the United Nations is backed by increasing sectors of society.
The “30 by 30” target has been established at the 15th Conference of the Parties (COP15) to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) under the “Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework”. This target is an integral part of the Sustainable Development Goals (the SDGs 14 and 15) and is seen as at least similar important to save the future life on our planet as the 1,5 degree C climate goal (SDG 13).
COP16
At COP16 to the CBD, held in two sessions—initially in Cali, Colombia, from October 21 to November 2, 2024, and subsequently in Rome from February 25 to 27, 2025—nations reaffirmed their commitment to the “30 by 30” target established under the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework. A central focus of COP16 was the mobilization of financial resources to achieve this target. Delegates agreed on a strategy to raise $200 billion annually by 2030 for biodiversity conservation efforts. This includes commitments from developed countries to increase international biodiversity financing to $20 billion per year by 2025 and $30 billion per year by 2030.
What is a protected area?
Protected areas, such as national park, are defined by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). They also provide Guidelines for Applying Protected Area Management Categories. As a member of the IUCN World Commission on Proteced Areas (WCPA), I am contributing to promote a representative. effectivly managed, equitably gouverned global system of marine and terrestrial proteced areas, including especially areas of particular importance for biodiversitry and ecosystem services.
Who monitores the development of the global protected area network?
The World Conservation Monitoring Center of UN-Environment (UNEP-WCMC) and IUCN. On their Proteced Planet site you can discover the world’s protected and conserved areas. Protected Planet is the most up to date and complete source of data on protected areas and other effective area-based conservation measures (OECMs), updated monthly with submissions from governments, non-governmental organizations, landowners and communities.

LT&C-Examples
Vision: By 2030, we aim to showcase 100 LT&C-Examples where tourism actively supports global protected areas.
East Atlantic Flyway
Vision: All wetlands of international importance along the East Atlantic Flyway of coastal birds are well protected, and the “string of pearls” is completed.
Arctic
Vision: All wetlands of international importance along the East Atlantic Flyway of coastal birds are well protected, and the “string of pearls” is completed.
Marine Protected Areas
Vision: Also in the marine environment the 30% protection goal will be met.
